Thomas Belhom

Thomas Belhom

Discography

Thomas Belhom's discography begins in 2000 with "Mobile Home" recorded in both the US and France; a mini-CD in a passport-shaped cover which recounts his adventures moving from country to country. Next came 3 albums on Ici d'ailleurs - "Remedios" (2003), "No Border" (2007) and "Rocéphine" (2012) - as well as the 2010 percussion album "Cheval Oblique" which came out on the German label, Apparent Extent.

Thomas Belhom has had a long an eventful career beginning with the Amor Belhom Duo and including regular collaborations with his friends in the US (David Grubbs, Giant Sand, Calexico, Lambchop etc.) and also the English group, Tindersticks. He played drums on Stuart Staples' two solo albums by and also on "The Hungry Saw" by Tindersticks which led him to play on the group's tours from 2003 to 2010 and play on their soundtracks for four films by Claire Denis. We should also note that the French film director Patrice Chéreau used the song "No border" in his latest film. In 2013, Thomas Belhom composed the music for the live performance "Secrets" by the Cirque iCi. His life has been marked by many rich encounters and epic sagas and accompanied by his long-standing partner, the painter Viva Yazon.

"Maritima" is Thomas Belhom's fourth album. The title is relatively self-explanatory because all the musical pieces and songs were composed near water at La Rochelle, Honfleur, Lisbon and Budapest. The record is a kind of organic, marine playground and nonetheless a work produced by a collective orchestrated by Thomas Belhom and woven around friendships. Those contributing include Pierre Favard on organ and guitars ("Hungary", "Carnaval mou"), Cedric Thimon on saxophone ("Panthère dans les Algues", "Dusk"), Adrien Rodrigue on violin ("Earthquake", "CoLor") along with Kim Ohio ("South of Tucson", "Carnaval mou") and Xavier Plumas, the leader of Tue-Loup ("Souvenir hanté") whose voices are mixed in with a medieval instrument - the nyckelharpa, played by Jon Darwood.

Thomas is a talented percussionist (vibraphone, drums, shaker, maracas, triangle, tambourine, rototoms, flexatone, gongs, claves etc.) and multi-instrumentalist (guitars, accordion, piano, organ hammond, gopichand) and writes, composes and sings songs with horizons that stretch out so far that it is a pleasure to get lost in them if we take the time and effort... French, English - the language is no problem - Thomas Belhom sings in both.

Since he woke up after his "Rocéphine" and his one-day coma, he is fully back to life now. His record is full of contrasts, generous, and bewitching. "Maritima" offers quasi-voodoo instrumental pieces ("Krayola", "Dusk") along with real down-to-earth fantasy when the steps of "Manon" in her boots create the rhythm track for a vibraphone tune or maybe a simple call to paint the sea ("Color") - a kind of maritime fresco with a Creole rhythm and melancholy strings. But there are also more autobiographical songs - "Hungary", the story of a tour-bus journey to Budapest with Tindersticks; "Carnaval mou" about the unfairness of half-brothers and sisters who are loving each other entirely; "Souvenir hanté" and its recollections of amnesia or maybe "South of Tucson" which reminds us that Thomas lived in Arizona for part of his life and has strong emotional ties there formed of profound friendships and sun.
